LORE & LUST BY KARLA NIKOLE : BOOK REVIEW
The slow burn vampire romance you didn't know you needed...
Haruka Hirano is alive, but not quite living. Surviving but not thriving. As an elite purebred vampire in the twenty-first century, he is broken. Content in his subpar existence.
He is done with life. But life is not finished with him.
When he receives a formal request to oversee an antiquated vampire ritual at Hertsmonceux Castle, Haruka grudgingly leaves his home to meet another purebred. The vampire is not what he expects. Truly, he is unlike any vampire Haruka has ever encountered: cautious, innocent and with the warmth and gravitational pull of the sun.
Lore and Lust is an exploration of cultures, contemporary society and romance. It puts a whimsical spin on traditional vampire lore, while also creating a vivid new world where love is love. No questions asked.
REVIEW
This is book 1 in the Queer Vampire Romance series and can be read as a standalone.
Haruka needs to find a new purebred source and fast. Since British purebreds had become extinct after the Great Vanishing, finding one was not easy in the least.
When he visits the vampires of the Oxford realm he is questioned as to why a particular purebred is callous enough to ignore the formal request of the Duke of Devonshire himself in participating in their archaic ceremony.
When Haruka tracks down the purebred to a bar in Camden Lock, he doesn't know what to expect from him. But he is unprepared for his poweful aura to pulse at it's very core when their eyes meet for the first time.
Nino Bianchi is unlike any purebred, he has ever met. His demeanor is juvenile but his age says otherwise.
Not only is he unaware of the bonding ceremony, but he also refuses to be part of it and chooses to live a normal life as an outcast of the aristocracy.
When Nino reconsiders Haruka’s offer to learn more on bonding and takes him up on it, they begin spending more time in eachother's company.
Haruka doesn't want to be bonded to anyone after he encountered a horrible experience in his past.
Nino wants more than anything to be bonded to Haruka.
Through navigating the intricacies of bonding rituals and find solace in eachother's company, will Haruka learn to trust again and give in to his desires to be with Nino despite being burned in the past?
This was such a beautiful slow burn romance. The world building was captivating and authenthic.
I loved the contemporary spin on this.
The characters were real, relatable and well fleshed out.
Haruka has been hurt in the past and has a melancholy aura about him. Nino is friendly, innocent and cautious, a perfect match to counteract Haruka's broodiness.
I am absolutely in love with the author's writing style. It was very compelling and original.
If you like a slow burn romance between two purebred vampire in the 21st century paired with hurt/comfort, low angst and all the feels, don't hesitate to pick this one up.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Karla Nikole has a long-standing love affair with Japan. They have always been very good to each other. Having lived in the country for two years and taken several extended vacations there, she is deeply inspired by the culture, language, landscape, food and people. A trip to Italy in 2018 for a wedding breathed new fire into her writing, eventually leading to the birth of Nino Bianchi and Haruka Hirano—two love letters to these beautiful countries. She has also lived in South Korea and Prague, and currently resides in the USA (although Milan is adamantly calling out to her).
